August Schäffer von Wienerwald (1833 - 1916)

After training at the Vienna Academy with Franz Steinfeld (1787–1868) from 1852 to 1856, Schäffer undertook study trips. His paintings, lithographs and etchings show favourite motifs from the Austrian Alps. In 1868 Schäffer became a member of the Vienna Academy. From 1871 to 1874 he was secretary, from 1874 to 1881 curator and from 1881 to 1910 director of the painting gallery of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He was elevated to the aristocracy as “Edler von Wienwald” in 1911. Tina Blau’s and Olga Wisinger-Florian’s teacher spent his summers in his villa in St. Gilgen, in the Salzkammergut.
