Josef Michael Feid (1806 - 1870)

Feid studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts – initially architecture, before changing to landscape painting with Joseph Mössmer (1780–1845) and subsequently self-educating. A fellow-student and friend was Friedrich Gauermann (1807–1862), who sometimes painted the staffage figures in Feid’s landscapes. The artist found his motifs in the Prater park, in the surroundings of Vienna and in the Salzkammergut. From 1828 he participated in the exhibitions at the Vienna Academy, and from 1850 in those at the Vienna Kunstverein. From 1843 he was also a member of the Vienna Academy. Feid is one of the principal representatives of Viennese Biedermeier landscape painting.
