Martin Johann Schmidt called Kremser Schmidt (1718 - 1801)

In the environment of Dürnstein Abbey and the workshop of his father, sculptor Johannes Schmidt (1684–1761), Martin showed a talent for drawing. He trained with Johann Gottlieb Starmayr (?–1767), a pupil of Peter Strudel. The paintings in the pilgrimage church of Maria Plain (1765) testify to his first work in Salzburg. He established his reputation with paintings in churches and monasteries along the Danube, in Slovenia, Hungary and Moravia, and was made a member of the Vienna Academy in 1768.
