Anton Romako (1832 - 1889)

Unappreciated by contemporary critics, this painter and aquarellist is now considered a predecessor of Austrian Modernism. From 1847, he studied at the Vienna Academy, soon becoming a private student of Wilhelm Kaulbach (1804–1874) in Munich. In 1851 he collaborated with Carl Rahl (1812–1865) on the designs for the interior decoration of the Ruhmeshalle [hall of fame] of the Vienna Arsenal. Romako experienced his prime from 1857 to 1876, working as a genre painter in Rome. Upon his return to Vienna, he struggled in vain to gain recognition for his painting.
