Adriaen Brouwer (1605/06 - 1638)

Brouwer, probably a pupil of Frans Hals (1580/85–1666), was an amateur writer and a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. His work developed from simple fine painting to nuanced colouration, his subjects from Christian iconography of vice to peasant genre painting, of which he and Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685) are considered the principal representatives. In 1631 Brouwer moved to Antwerp, where he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke and a friend of Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640).
