Aert van der Neer (um/c 1603 - 1677)

As a young man, Neer was a major in the service of the lords of Arkel, and took up painting only later. When he married Lysbeth Govaerts in Amsterdam in 1629, he designated himself as a "schilder" (painter). He may have trained with his brother-in-law Rafael Govertsz. Camphuysen, but this is not documented. His sons Eglon and Johannes were painters; the latter evidently worked all his life in his father’s studio. Though known for his winter and moonlight landscapes, from 1659 Neer supplemented his income by keeping a wine tavern. In 1662 an inventory of his works was carried out to pay off his creditors. At his death, 15 months’ rent were outstanding.
