Anton Schiffer (1811 - 1876)
A distinguished landscape painter, Schiffer initially trained with his father, Franz Josef, who worked as a theatre painter in Klagenfurt and Bruck an der Mur. Anton was the grandson of Mathias Schiffer (1744–1827), one of the last monumental painters of the Styrian Baroque. From 1833 to 1835, Anton studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with history painter Leopold Kupelwieser (1796–1862), and from 1835 was a regular participant in Academy exhibitions. His high-quality, realistic (late) Biedermeier landscapes, much appreciated by the public, show regions including Lower Austria, the Salzkammergut, Berchtesgaden and Styria.
