Carlo Saraceni called Carlo Veneziano (1579 - 1620)

Saraceni’s training is not documented. He went to Rome in 1598, and is said to have been close to the French artists there. His contact with Caravaggio is documented, and acquaintance with Adam Elsheimer assumed. In 1607 he became a member of the "Accademia di San Luca". Around 1610 he was one of the painters most in demand in Rome, and had a workshop with several pupils and assistants. In order to satisfy the market, he had works executed several times. In 1613 he refused an invitation to Mantua from Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga. In Venice, he collaborated with Giarola and Le Clerc on a painting for the Doge’s Palace in 1619.
