Edmund Mahlknecht (1820 - 1903)

Mahlknecht’s artistic talent was discovered by his drawing teacher Joseph Hasslwander (1812–1878). His brother Karl (1810–1893) taught him until in 1836 he enrolled at the Vienna Academy, where his teachers were Joseph Mössmer (1780–1845), Franz Steinfeld (1787–1868), and from 1839 Anton Hansch (1813–1876). Mahlknecht’s mostly small-scale landscapes and animal pictures were influenced by Friedrich Gauermann (1807–1862), but do not attain Gauermann’s level of artistic expression. From 1861, Mahlknecht was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, and held numerous exhibitions. He was also drawing tutor in the Royal House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
