Francesco Villamena (1566 - 1624)

Francesco Villamena is known primarily as draughtsman and copper engraver. Only few paintings can be linked with him. He was a pupil of the Dutch engraver Cornelis Cort (1533–1578), who lived in Rome, and was influenced by the Bolognese painter and engraver Agostino Carracci (1557–1602), who frequented Cort’s studio in the 1570s. Besides independent pictorial compositions, he imitated works by artists such as Raphael, Paolo Veronese, Federico Barocci and Giulio Romano. His patrons included Cassiano dal Pozzo, secretary to Cardinal Francesco Barbarini, a nephew of Pope Urban VIII.
