Franz Alt (1821 - 1914)
Water-colourist who, together with his brother Rudolf (1812–1905), was amongst the most prominent Austrian landscape and veduta painters during the latter half of the 19th century. His œuvre is captivating in its light airiness and its precise, miniature-like execution. Franz trained with his father Jakob (1789–1872), a landscape painter, draughtsman and lithographer. From 1836 to 1844 he attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, many study trips taking him through Central Europe and Italy. He cultivated acquaintance with the Austrian aristocracy, which brought him numerous commissions well into his old age.
