Franz Hinterholzer (1851 - 1928)

An Austrian landscape painter with an early talent for drawing, Hinterholzer was awarded a state scholarship to study at the Munich Academy (1868-1871). He learned history painting with Karl Theodor von Piloty (1826–1886), but soon concentrated on landscape painting. This decision may have been influenced by a chronic eye complaint which later left him almost completely blind. He travelled to northern Germany, France, Spain and Italy, and in 1886 returned to Salzburg, where he established a private school of painting. He participated in exhibitions in Munich and Salzburg.
