Friedrich Gauermann (1807 - 1862)

Landscape and animal painter, Gauermann was influential in the development of the Biedermeier Alpine landscape. He trained initially with his father, Jakob (1773–1843), before studying from 1824 to 1827 at the Vienna Academy with Joseph Mössmer (1780–1845). His fellow-students included Josef Michael Feid (1806–1870) and Anton Hansch (1813–1876). Friedrich studied 17th-century landscape and animal painters Paulus Potter, Philips Wouwerman and Jacob van Ruisdael. From 1825 he made regular visits to the Austrian and Bavarian Alps, particularly to the Salzkammergut. From the 1830s his work was much in demand in Viennese society.
