Friedrich von Amerling (1803 - 1887)
Born in the suburbs of Vienna, Amerling studied history painting at the Vienna Academy from 1815 to 1824, then lived in Prague until 1826. He spent the period from August 1827 to March 1828 in London, studying English art and the work of prominent portrait painters Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792) and Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830). From 1832 onwards, Amerling received commissions from notables including Emperor Francis I and members of Viennese high society.
