Heinrich Bürkel (1802 - 1869)

Self-taught, Bürkel copied Dutch masters such as Philips Wouwermann, Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael and Adriaen Brouwer in the state gallery in Schleissheim, and travelled several times to Italy. After painting water colours from nature, he executed oil paintings in his studio, frequently repeating favourite subjects due to popular demand. His career began with the founding of the Munich Kunstverein, counterforce to the Munich Academy, and Bertel Thorvaldsen purchased two of his works. He was friends with Adalbert Stifter and Carl Spitzweg. In 1858 Bürkel was made an honorary member of the Munich Academy. From 1868, illness prevented him from almost any further work.
