Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael (um/c 1628/1629 - 1682)
The only source for Ruisdael’s year of birth is a notary’s protocol dated 1661, in which he gave his age as 32. His training is not documented, but it is assumed that he trained with his father Isaack, his uncle Salomon van Ruysdael or Allart van Everdingen. His first dated works are from 1646. In 1648 he became a member of the Guild of St Luke in Haarlem. Nicolaes Berchem drew and painted with him in Bentheim Castle, and painted the staffage figures in several of his works. Jacob moved first to Antwerp and later to Amsterdam, where he obtained citizenship in 1659, and where Meindert Hobbema is documented as his apprentice.
