Jan II. Vermeer van Haarlem the Elder (1628 - 1691)

Vermeer van Haarlem is the name of a Dutch family of five generations of artists, who added “van Haarlem” to distinguish themselves from Jan Vermeer van Delft. Born in Haarlem in 1628, Jan began training at the age of ten in the workshop of landscape painter Jacob Willemsz. de Wet, where he stayed for ten years. Initially, his style followed that of his teacher, who was influenced by Rembrandt, and later that of Jacob van Ruisdael. Dated works can be identified from 1648 onwards. He joined the Guild of St Luke in 1654. Adriaen van Ostade was one of the artists who painted staffage figures in his works.
