Jan Lievens (1607 - 1674)

Son of an embroiderer, Lievens, then aged eight, probably trained for two years with Joris van Schooten (1587–1651) in Leiden, then for two further years with Pieter Lastman (1583–1633) in Amsterdam, where he familiarised himself with Italian painting, particularly with Caravaggio and his Dutch successors. As a young man, Lievens collaborated with Rembrandt (1606–1669). Further important ports of call were Leiden, London (where he painted portraits of the royal family), Antwerp, Amsterdam and The Hague. In 1635 he joined the Antwerp painters’ guild.
