Jan Sanders called Hemessen (1500/04 - 1566)

From 1519, Hemessen was apprenticed to Hendrick van Cleve I/Hans van Cleef in Antwerp; he became a master in 1524, and probably spent the years until 1534 in Italy. In 1548 he was dean of the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. He had a flourishing workshop. In 1550/51 he sold his possessions and moved to Haarlem, but was certainly in Antwerp in 1554/55. His oeuvre includes religious subjects, history and genre paintings. His style was instrumental in establishing the Flemish tradition of genre painting.
