Johann Baptist Alois Makart the Elder (1815 - 1849)

Father of the famous painter Hans Makart (1840–1884), Johann enjoyed huge success in Vienna with his opulent history paintings. Although self-taught, he drew and painted to a remarkable standard. He initially studied theology. After the death of his father, who had been administrator of the Imperial Palace in Innsbruck, he applied for the post, but was instead appointed Imperial and Royal administrative supervisor at the Salzburg Residenz, then in 1843 titular “Hofzimmerwärter” in the Mirabell Palace. In 1848 he joined a volunteer corps destined for Italy, and died in a field hospital in Imola, near Naples, in 1849.
