Johann Heinrich Schönfeld (1609 - 1684)

According to Joachim von Sandrart, Schönfeld (who was born blind in his left eye) trained in painting, drawing and printmaking with Johann Sichelbein in Memmingen, becoming his assistant in 1626. He studied in Stuttgart from 1627 to 1629, and travelled to Italy in 1633, working in Rome and Naples for the family of the Dukes of Orsini. In 1651 he returned via Venice to Biberach, and a year later became a citizen of Augsburg. He received commissions from imperial court circles travelling in southern Germany, and from Salzburg Archbishops Guidobald Thun and Maximilian Gandolph Kuenburg. His oeuvre includes sacred and secular works.
