Joseph Anton Pfaffinger (1684 - 1758)
According to Pillwein, Pfaffinger trained at the expense of Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton Harrach in the workshop of Salzburg sculptor Wilhelm Weissenkirchner, and later with Johann Baptist Spatz in Linz. Pfaffinger is first mentioned as an artist in 1716, in Kremsmünster Abbey. In 1718 he was granted citizenship in Salzburg, where he ran a workshop until his death. His first wife was Maria Theresia Burger, his second Maria Klara, daughter of the sculptor Michael Mandl; after her husband’s death, she married his journeyman Lorenz Wieser. Pfaffinger, whose work was much in demand, often worked from designs by other artists.
