Nicolaes Berchem (1621/22 - 1683)
Son of the still-life painter Pieter Claesz (1597–1660), Nicolaes Berchem trained with his father and, according to Arnold von Houbraken, also with Jan van Goyen. He became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1642. Recent research assumes that he spent time in Italy between 1651 and 1653. From 1677 onwards he probably worked in Amsterdam. Berchem is one of the best-known representatives of “Dutch Italianate landscape” painters.
