Pierre Subleyras (1699 - 1749)
After his apprenticeship, Subleyras went to Paris in 1726; the following year, his painting "The Brazen Serpent" gained him the Prix de Rome, and from 1728 he settled in the Eternal City, where he was friends with Claude Joseph Vernet. Subleyras copied works by Raphael, drew from nature and illustrated fables. He painted portraits and altar-pieces for churches including St Peter’s. His official portrait of Pope Benedict XIV was copied many times. In 1740 he was accepted into the "Accademia di S. Luca", and in 1743 into the "Accademia dell’Arcadia". He refused invitations to the courts of Saxony and Spain. His work lies at the point of transition between Late Baroque and Neo-classicism.
