Pieter Nason (1612 - um/c 1688)

Nason’s parents, from Antwerp, had their son baptised in Amsterdam on 16 February 1612. The style of his earliest known portraits calls to mind Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy. Nason lived in The Hague from 1638/39; he joined the Guild of St Luke in 1639 and in 1656 participated in establishing the "Confrérie Pictura", which split from the Guild. Mainly a portrait painter, he also painted several still lifes, and in 1647 he apprenticed landscape painter Pieter Cosyn. He was probably in England in 1663, and by 1666 he was painting portraits in Kleve. His clients included the Hague citizenry, high-ranking officers from aristocratic circles, and Elector Friedrich Wilhelm and his family.
