Halauska was known for his small-scale landscapes, oil studies and watercolours, which brought him wide recognition during his lifetime. In "Bad Ischl", the light colouration, airy atmosphere, combination of colour fields and sometimes schematic rendering of the landscape indicate the middle period of his œuvre, around 1860/70.
Approaching from Ebensee along the shimmering turquoise waters of the Traun, the viewer sees Ischl with the parish church of St Nicholas. The Kreuzstein (formerly Kohl[en]stein) jutting from the river in the foreground was an attractive and popular destination, though a hindrance to navigation on the Traun. Rising behind the village are the Katrin and Hainzen mountains, and on the far right the peak of the Rettenkogel. On the left, the valley continues to Bad Goisern. Visible in the distant background are the glaciers in the Dachstein range.
