The "Edge of the Woods with Panoramic View" fits well into the large number of his wooded landscapes. The left side is dominated by a pollard willow bending in the wind, its sparse branches having been repeatedly cut. Typically of the Dutch Italianate painters, the southern atmosphere is expressed through luminarist phenomena and characteristic landscape features. A blue sky shimmers above the clear air, gradually fading into the golden glow of the setting sun that illumines the wide landscape. A dark cloud creates a touch of drama, emphasising the spatial depth that ends in a mountain range.
Wayfarers have settled down for a rest by the track and under the willow. The staffage was probably provided by Adriaen van de Velde (1636–1672).
