Kreuzer has arranged a still life of grapes of various colours, fig, peaches, apples, pineapple and pumpkin on a table with a shiny marble top, and added a high Biedermeier vase with a wide variety of flowers and berry branches. Two drops of water on the table-top indicate the necessity for water in the vase. The artist has enlivened his work with a butterfly and a squirrel holding a walnut in one paw. The admiral and the short-lived fly are reminders of the transience of life – fruit and plants also wither and die. The surfaces are diverse: the ripe, juicy grapes have a sheen, contrasting with the withered leaf, and the top peach has a velvety skin.
