The drawing shows a favourite motif of 19th century travellers to Salzburg. It may date from Reinhold’s first visit to the town, when he stayed at the "Hotel Schiff" on 20 August 1828. The execution is varied and precise, as evident in the diverse styles of lines and hatching.
The view from the cemetery gate up to the Fortress is accurately rendered. On the left, the Mariazell (originally St Catherine) Chapel adjoins the transept of St Peter’s Church. On the right are the spire of the Holy Cross Chapel, the St Aegydius Chapel, the exterior of the catacombs and the barred arcades containing the burial vaults. Rising above the scene is Hohensalzburg Fortress with its fortifications. A striking feature, differing from contemporary depictions, is the almost empty burial ground, in contrast to the many graves with crosses along the church wall.
