This quickly-shaped pen drawing is an exceptional work from an unusual standpoint. With only a few lines, Loos demonstrates his talent for drawing. The left side shows a group of trees in close-up; the right offers a view of the town with the Fortress, Mönchsberg and the (as yet unregulated) River Salzach. In the background rises the Hoher Göll, with the Untersberg hinted at on the right.
Loos chose his standpoint – the Hochgitzen hill (district of Bergheim) – with care. Not only could he show a varied stretch of land, but also a long, thickly wooded hill in front of the town. Visible above the trees at the highest point is the upper back of the pilgrimage church of Maria Plain, built in 1671–1673 to plans by Giovanni Antonio Dario.
Usually, artists – as for instance Castell – would stand at the foot of the Plainberg to portray the baroque town.
