View of the Neutor
Konrad Sŭpanchich (1858 - 1935)
Framesize 40.00 x 30.00 x 3.50 cm
Gross mass 39.90 x 29.90 cm
Supanchich shows the Riedenburg (western) side of the tunnel, which was begun under the rule of Prince-Archbishop Max Gandolf Kuenburg (1668–1687) and opened under Prince-Archbishop Sigismund Schrattenbach in 1766. The term “Neutor” is still in current use, rather than “Sigmundstor”.
Johann Baptist Hagenauer designed the portals. The preparatory drawing is perceptible in the watercolour sketch. The statue of the martyred King Sigismund of Burgundy (over 5m high) with helmet and armour is vaguely outlined. Of the further decoration, the pyramids are shown, though not the burning cannonballs.
Pedestrians use the tunnel now linking the Hildmannplatz with the Herbert von Karajan Platz. The eastern portal bears a bust of Schrattenbach in bas-relief under the inscription "TE SAXA LOQUUNTUR" (the stones will speak of you), with a Medusa head on either side to ward off evil.
