Emanuel de Witte (um/c. 1617 - 1692)

Emanuel de Witte, a distinguished painter of church interiors, initially painted history pictures and portraits. In 1636 he became a member of the Alkmaar Guild of St. Luke; between 1641 and 1651 he worked in Delft. Around 1650, de Witte, Gerard Houckgeest (100?–1661) and Hendrick van Vliet (1611(?)–1675) formed the circle of Delft architectural painters, which existed only for a short period. He moved his studio to Amsterdam in 1651. Despite his high reputation, he repeatedly found himself in dire financial straits and, according to Arnold van Houbraken (1660–1719) he committed suicide.
