Frederik de Moucheron (1633 - 1686)

Shortly after Frederik’s birth, the whole family moved to Amsterdam, where – according to Dutch painter and artist biographer Arnold Houbraken (1660–1719) – as a young man he was apprenticed to Jan Asselijn (between 1610/14–1652), an Italianate painter who introduced him to the bright, clear ambience of the south. After his master’s death, Moucheron spent some years in France; visits to Paris and Lyon are documented in 1656. It is unclear whether he ever set foot in Italy, but he painted in the Italian style and often had colleagues paint staffage for him.
