Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682 - 1754)

Giovanni Battista Piazzetta was a pupil of his father Giacomo Piazzetta (1640–1705), a simple wood carver and sculptor, before training with Antonio Molinari (1665–1727). Around 1703, he travelled to Bologna to continue his studies in the workshop of Giuseppe Maria Crespi (1665–1747). There he studied the realistic chiaroscuro painting of Caravaggio (1573–1610) and the figure ideal of Guercino (1591–1666). In 1711, the artist returned to Venice, where he remained until his death.
