This high-quality drawing was formerly attributed to Viennese landscape painter Martin von Molitor (1759–1812) and entered as such in the Residenzgalerie inventory. Today it is assumed to be the work of an unknown Austrian painter. In the 19th century, Salzburg was a popular destination for many artists of the Romantic movement. Depending on the standpoint, the town is shown either nestling among the mountains or gradually merging into the surrounding hills. The artists made sketches from nature, using them later as models for oil paintings.
