Hans Makart (1840 - 1884)
Makart received his first instruction in painting with Johann Fischbach in Salzburg, in 1850/51. After studying with Karl Theodor von Piloty in Munich from 1861 to 1865, he was invited to Vienna by Emperor Franz Joseph I. He enjoyed great success with opulent history paintings, and influenced the prestigious interior decorations of the showcase buildings on the new Ringstraße. In 1879, Makart, central figure and organiser of glamorous festivities, staged the legendary pageant of the City of Vienna in celebration of the Imperial couple’s silver wedding anniversary.
