Josef Michael Mayburger (1814 - 1908)
The Josef Mayburger Kai [quay] in Salzburg commemorates the artist, who grew up in humble circumstances. He completed teacher training college, was an assistant teacher in Mülln and taught until 1873 at the Salzburg Realschule, where his pupils included Hans Makart (1840–1884). Georg Pezolt (1810–1878) encouraged his talent for drawing. Mountain hikes and travel inspired his successful choice of subjects, Salzburg among them. From 1840 he was a member of the “Kleine Akademie” established by Johann Fischbach (1797–1871). As a local councillor and founder of the “town beautification society”, he was active in preserving Salzburg’s historic buildings.
