Karl (Carl) Schweninger the Elder (1854 - 1849)

Karl Schweninger’s trademarks are romantic landscapes from the Austrian Alps; besides oil paintings, he made many watercolours and sketches. His genre paintings and nudes are less well-known. He painted eight frescos of Alpine landscapes for the former court salon in Vienna’s North Railway Station. Schweninger studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. From 1842 he participated in the annual exhibitions at the St Anna Academy, and from 1852 in the monthly exhibitions of the Vienna Kunstverein. He was the father of Rosa Schweninger (1848–1918) and Carl Schweninger the Younger (1854–1912), both of whom made their career in art.
