Ludovico/Lodovico Gimignani (1643 - 1697)
Gimignani was probably destined to be an artist – his godparents were Giulio Rospigliosi, later Pope Clemens IX (1667–1669) and Caterina Tezi, wife of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, whose workshop Ludovico entered after training with his father. Both Bernini and Rospigliosi continued to encourage and sponsor him throughout his life. The latter financed him for a stay in northern Italy from 1666 to 1668. After the Pope’s death, Gimignani worked for his successor, Clemens X (1670–1676), as well as painting numerous altar-pieces and frescos for churches in Rome.
