Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708 - 1787)
By 1740, Batoni had established himself in Rome with history paintings; he later became known for his portraits. From his father’s goldsmith workshop and the drawing academy in Lucca, he arrived in the Eternal City in 1727. He attended the private academy of Sebastiano Conca and Agostino Masucci, studied the work of Raphael in the Vatican and made drawings of ancient sculptures. In 1729, having married, he lost the financial support of sponsors and patrons. He sold copies of ancient sculptures, painted fans and provided staffage in the landscapes of Jan Frans von Bloemen and Hendrik Frans van Lint. From 1741 he was a member of the "Accademia di San Luca", where he held various official positions.
