Rudolf von Alt (1812 - 1905)

Rudolf and his brother Franz trained with their father Jakob. Rudolf studied from 1829 to 1832 in Joseph Mössmer’s landscape class at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Painter and watercolourist, he travelled in the Alpine lands and to Salzburg, Italy, the eastern regions of the Habsburg Monarchy and in 1863, at the invitation of the Russian Czar, to the Crimea. In 1866, financial straits due to illness forced him to sell most of his watercolours. Participation in the 1869 Paris Salon brought him initial success and official recognition. In 1880 he received a commission for the Crown Prince’s album, and this was followed by a state commission from Bulgaria.
