Thomas Ender (1793 - 1875)

From 1806 to 1813 Thomas, twin brother of portrait painter Johann Nepomuk Ender (1793–1854) studied landscape painting at the Vienna Academy under Lorenz Janscha (1749–1812) and Josef Mössmer (1780– 1845). He was greatly influenced by the works of Claude Lorrain (1600–1682) and Jacob van Ruisdael (1628–1682). In 1829, Ender was accepted into the inner circle of the “Kammermaler” [court chamber painters] to Archduke Johann of Austria (1782–1859). His landscapes brought him widespread fame and were copied by English artists as steel engravings.
