In contrast to Protestant Holland, in the Southern Netherlands paintings with religious subjects were much in demand – such as Simon de Vos’ Adoration of the Three Magi. Framed by architectural elements entwined by climbing plants, the scene is richly peopled, in strong colours and warm light. Heaven and earth are linked by a cloud formation with a throng of angels. Below sits Mary; Jesus in her lap holds out his hand in a gesture of blessing towards the head of the king, who kneels before him, having placed his crown, sceptre and offering on the ground. The two other kings are standing by. Behind them are ox and ass by the manger. The group is completed by shepherds, soldiers, horse and camels.
