According to the 1897 inventory book, the signed and dated picture was acquired by the Residenzgalerie between 1932 and 1935 at a very low price, with no mention of seller, provenance or purchase date.
This small painting shows the risen Christ, with Peter kneeling before him. (Lk 24, 34) The Apostle is one of the first to whom Jesus appears after his resurrection. The youthful Son of God shows his wounds and raises his left hand in blessing. He bows his head slightly towards Peter, who holds his gaze. Thenig sets the scene in a view of a Central European landscape – a typical baroque representation. The skilfully modelled body of Christ and the clothing of both figures demonstrate the artist’s talent.
