Joris van der Haagen (um/c 1615 - 1669)
Framesize 110.50 x 162.00 x 7.50 cm
The foreground is animated by a wide variety of birds; a path from behind a (repoussoir) rock leads along the bank into a wood. Further staffage consists of cows, goats and goatherds, as well as figures with dog and pack mule. Artists who painted staffage in Haagen’s woodland pictures included Nicolaes Berchem, Paulus Potter and Adriaen van de Velde. The architectural elements are a water-tower, a stone bridge and two castles on hillsides. The light, delicate colours around the landscape view contrast with the dark brown and green shades in the rest of the painting, which was previously attributed to Adam Pijnacker and Adriaen Jansz. Ocker.
In 1992 the Galerie Sanct Lucas in Vienna had the painting restored, and in the course of the work, Joris van der Haagen’s signature was revealed. The work was purchased for the Residenzgalerie collection in 1994.
