View of Untersberg and Göll
Framesize 34.40 x 63.80 x 5.10 cm
This panoramic landscape study, with its unusual format, is attributed to Friedrich Loos, and was probably painted during his time in Salzburg between 1826 and 1835, when he went on walking tours in the surroundings, exploring new vantage points and depicting special views. The panorama is compressed, so that the dimensions of landmarks such as mountains, hills and lakes are altered and brought closer to the foreground.
The view is from the Tannberg over the Wallersee, towards the south. On a promontory in the foreground a small group of figures, enjoying the view, emphasises the rural idyll. Seekirchen is indicated on the right bank of the lake. The mountain backdrop is impressive: (from the right) Untersberg, Watzmann, Hoher Göll and Tennengebirge, with the Gaisberg in the centre.
