Nason’s "Portrait of a Man" is typical of the rapidly spreading style of portraiture in the mid-17th century. The background – hitherto monochrome, possibly with chiaroscuro – has changed; here Nason integrates a landscape view. Surrounded by a fabric canopy accentuated by a tassel, the young man leans casually on a stone console. His gloved left hand, thrust beside him, energises the lower right area. Both the canopy and the console are reminiscent of the prestigious society portrait increasingly favoured by
the bourgeoisie of the northern Netherlands.
The "Portrait of a Man" was auctioned at at Christie’s in London about six months before Georg Haslauer purchased it for the Residenzgalerie.
