This portrait shows a young man wearing a black barret and outer clothing; conspicuous are the round white folds of his ruff and his red beard, which falls from his lower cheeks and ends in two points. Mor was considered a keen observer, so his intention was probably to express the man’s pride in his beard.
Pupils and copyists made an incredible number of contemporary copies of Mor’s portraits of eminent personalities, which were also sold as prints by various engravers.
