Loos worked in Salzburg between 1826 and 1835 and painted the landscape in Johann Michael Sattler’s "Salzburg Panorama". The unfinished painting "The Rudolfskai in Salzburg", dating from the final year of his stay, offers insights into the painting process. The foreground shows the town’s architecture with its buildings and churches, as a preliminary drawing in pencil and sepia. The depiction of the Franciscan Church is interesting, as it shows the helmet-domed tower, indicating the period between 1670 and 1866/67. The next stage is the wash and underpainting, seen around the Cathedral, of which the dome, as well as the Fortress, Mönchsberg, Untersberg and the sky are already executed in oils. Loos’s skilful treatment of light and shade gives a realistic impression of a clear summer day almost 200 years ago.
