View from the Rossfeld over Salzburg

Kummer’s paintings are realistic, evocative landscapes based on intensive study of nature. A major role in his œuvre is played by mountain views, which had been much in demand since scientific exploration and changes in leisure activities greatly increased general interest in the mountains.
With his "View from the Rossfeld", the artist presents the northern foothills of the Alps – an undramatic scene, with the meandering River Salzach, the silhouette of the town, the Kapuzinerberg and behind it the Plainberg. The two highest hills on the right are the Gaisberg und the Schwarzenberg. The foreground shows an idyllic pastoral scene with herd and herdsmen.
Kummer’s view reverses the usual angle, which chooses the view showing the background of the mountains.
